President Andrzej Duda on Friday designated Beata Szydlo from Law and Justice (PiS) to prime minister of Poland. The new government is likely to be appointed next week.
"This is an important and extraordinary moment: PiS is starting government with an independent majority in the Sejm (lower house) and Senate. This means great responsibility for Polish state affairs", President Duda said during the official designation.
"It is extremely important for Poland to become a country which helps those who are weaker and does not need to fear the strong", the Polish president also remarked.
"Prime Minister Beata Szydlo and her government will be able to count on me in all state matters. I am convinced our collaboration will be good", Duda also said.
Duda also commended PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who was present at the designation, for resigning the premiership in Szydlo's favour.
"Indeed everyone in Poland knows that it is you who is at the head of PiS. It takes a great personality and a great patriot absolutely committed to the idea of building a strong Poland (...) to hand over power to those with whom you have to date worked with at the cost of your quite human personal ambitions", Duda said, adding that he was "full of admiration" for Kaczynski for his move.
Szydlo thanked for the trust placed in her and assured that her government will "do everything not to disappoint Poles".
"Our motto will be hard work and humility", the PM designate said.
According to the Polish constitution, the prime minister presents the government's programme to the Sejm and motions for a confidence vote within 14 days of the government's appointment by the president. (PAP)
