President invites world leaders to WWII outbreak anniversary

President Andrzej Duda has issued invitations to leaders of EU, NATO and the Eastern Partnership countries, and the UN secretary general, to attend the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II on September 1, Andrzej Duda's aide Krzysztof Szczerski said.

"The President has issued invitations to the ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, to Poland, for September 1. They have been sent to our closest allies, that is to the leaders of all countries within NATO, the European Union and the EU's Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and Belarus), and to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres," Szczerski told PAP on Wednesday.

Launched in 2009, the Eastern Partnership programme is designed to bring the six post-Soviet states closer to the European Union.

The President's aide said "there are plans for separate Polish-German commemorations, mainly devoted to remembering civilian casualties of the war, as well as big international ceremonies that will likely take place in Warsaw."

The first working meeting with ambassadors from the invited countries has already been held at the President's Office, Krzysztof Szczerski reported. The Office is now waiting for confirmations and delegation line-ups from individual countries, he added. (PAP)
