During a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace, President Andrzej Duda presented state distinctions in connection with the Cursed Soldiers Day.

In the evening, President Duda will take part in ceremonies held at the Tomb of Unknown Soldier in the centre of Warsaw. Similar commemorations are planned across the country.

The Cursed Soldiers were underground organisations fighting against the communist regime, which seized power in 1944, after World War II. They fought with Soviet-imposed rule well into the 1950s. The last pro-independence fighter, Józef Franczak, nome de 'Lalek,' perished in an ambush in 1963. They were treated as outlaws by the communist authorities.

March 1 is Cursed Soldiers National Remembrance Day in Poland, officially established by the Polish parliament in 2011 upon a motion by the late Polish President Lech Kaczyński.(PAP/AW)
