By developing economic ties and doing business together we can build the security infrastructure, President Andrzej Duda said at a meeting with ambassadors representing the member states of the Three Seas initiative and US envoys in those countries.

At a meeting in the Presidential Palace on Monday evening, also attended by US Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher and German Ambassador to Poland Rolf Nikel, President Andrzej Duda stressed the unique background of the countries making up the Three Seas initiative.

The initiative groups the countries between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic seas to cooperate on infrastructural and energy projects.

"We are members of the EU, but we are perfectly aware of the situation in our part of Europe. All the countries that make up the great Three Seas initiative - except Austria - used to be countries that were behind the 'Iron Curtain'. In an obvious way, this slowed down our economic and infrastructural development for years," the president observed.

In this context  Andrzej Duda made an appeal for EU member states to enjoy the same infrastructural standards.

Strengthening security and cooperation in using EU funds is another issue within the initiative, Andrzej Duda said.

The Polish president stressed the importance of US President Donald Trump's interest in the initiative and his participation in the Three Seas summit in 2017. "By developing economic ties and by doing business together we can also build the sphere and infrastructure of security," Andrzej Duda said.

The Polish president expressed hope that the member states will manage to create a Three Seas fund to finance the key regional infrastructural projects.

The Three Seas Initiative seeks to strengthen ties between countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic seas. Initiated by the presidents of Poland and Croatia, it focuses on enhancing economic cooperation between the member countries in areas such as energy, transport and digitalisation. The initiative brings together Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania and Austria. (PAP)
