New Year's Address of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Dear Compatriots!

The exceptional year 2018 - the year of celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poland's regaining independence - is behind us. It was a great celebration time of Polish freedom and national pride. The feast of all of us. Thank you for your involvement in thousands of local and national anniversary initiatives. For the wonderful atmosphere of those days, when, as it was back in 1918, we gathered under the white and red flag. There is and, I trust, there will always be a place for each of us under our flag.

Also in 2019, we will recall ourselves and remind the world how great the Polish freedom spirit is. The occasion for this will be afforded by the centenary of the Greater Poland Uprising and of the first of three Silesian uprisings, the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 2 and the 20th anniversary of Poland's membership in NATO. We will also commemorate the 450th anniversary of the Union of Lublin, and the 15th anniversary of the Republic of Poland's accession to the European Union. Forty years after the first pilgrimage of the Polish Pope to his Home Country, and on the 30th  anniversary of the landmark elections of June 4, 1989, and in particular the first free elections to the Senate, we will once again take stock of our history as a history of tenacious striving for freedom, independence and peace.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

It is our common duty to build and strengthen the Republic of Poland. In the new year we will elect our representatives to the European Parliament, the Sejm and the Senate. This way, each of us contributes to an independent, secure and stable state. However, citizens' decisions also require responsibility on the part of politicians of all colours. Election campaign is a good time for a substantive discussion about the future of Poland.

But public affairs are only one area of life. There are also other important choices and decisions. I wish all of you who will experience important personal events this year - marriage, childbirth, or important exams - peace, optimism and, of course, good luck. May your efforts from previous years bear the expected fruit. May the New Year 2019 abound for you in health and prosperity.

I wish you peace, mutual respect and understanding in your families, among friends, neighbours and co-workers. May you always be sure to be offered a kind smile and a helping hand, to encounter expressions of simple human kindness. Let's be generous with them - because the more we give, the more we get.

Once again: all the best and all the New Year Eve's enjoyment!
A Happy New Year!

President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda
