Polish president's aide sees chance for US base after Washington talks

  |   US National Security Adviser John Bolton and Krzysztof Szczerski Krzysztof Szczerski and Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell

There is a chance that the US will establish permanent military infrastructure in Poland, Krzysztof Szczerski, chief aide to President Andrzej Duda, said in Washington on Wednesday following a series of meetings with US officials.

"The aim of my Washington visit is to build a consensus among politicians and experts regarding President Andrzej Duda's plan to establish permanent US military infrastructure in Poland that will not only strengthen Polish-American security and partnership, but will also bolster the security of the entire alliance, including its eastern flank," Krzysztof Szczerski said.

This was the rationale behind his Tuesday meeting with US National Security Adviser John Bolton and Wednesday's talks with Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell. Later on Tuesday, Krzysztof Szczerski was also scheduled to meet with Republican and Democratic congressmen.

The same objective can be seen in his Tuesday's talks at the Atlantic Council and the planned meeting at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). Both think tanks positively assess the concept of US permanent military presence in Poland, according to Krzysztof Szczerski.

After the talks held so far, "there is a big chance to build a consensus around permanent military presence in our country among the American public, including politicians and experts," Krzysztof Szczerski said.

Polish President Andrzej Duda, during his White House meeting with Donald Trump in Washington at the end of October, expressed his hope for a jointly built permanent US military base in Poland, which has been dubbed "Fort Trump." Since then, Poland has been in talks with the US on the implementation of the project which, according to the Polish side, is to raise the country's security and have a positive influence on the security of the eastern NATO flank.
