President to visit White House, Vatican in fourth year of his term

The President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda will visit the White House and the Vatican in the fourth year of his presidency, top aide Krzysztof Szczerski has told PAP.

These two visits will launch Andrzej Duda's fourth year in terms of foreign policy, Krzysztof Szczerski added. Throughout the previous year, the main theme will be Poland's membership of the United Nations Security Council.

Three years ago on Monday, the head of state made his oath before the National Assembly.

The president's top associate said that in the forthcoming months, Andrzej Duda will be taking action on the international scene, and the autumn promises to be "exceptionally active" in this respect.

Already in August, the President will make "an historic visit" to Australia and New Zealand. In the first of these countries, important deals will be signed on military purchases; a bilateral forum will be held as Australian firms look to take part in the Baltic Pipe project and in the Polish mining industry; and infrastructure agreements will also be signed.

In New Zealand, the head of state will become the first Polish leader to meet fellow countrymen who were deported, as children, by the Soviet authorities in 1940-41, and eventually found their way, alongside the Anders Army, to Iran and then New Zealand.

"These people have been waiting for the Polish President for 75 years and at last their desire will be fulfilled," minister Szczerski said.

In the autumn, President Duda will attend the summit of the Three Seas Initiative in Bucharest, the aide added, and "there are also plans for a meeting of the Presidents of Poland and the United States in the White House;" as well as "an audience with the Holy Father in connection with the anniversary of the election of John Paul II as Pope in October."

Towards the end of 2018, the UN's climate summit, COP24, will take place in Katowice (southern Poland), featuring Andrzej Duda and many other heads of state, one of whom, French President Emmanuel Macron, is likely to turn his stay into a bilateral visit.

Finally, President Duda has been chosen from among world leaders to deliver this year's Churchill lecture in Zurich, also this autumn. The annual event marks the anniversary of the British statesman's speech in 1946, in which he called for the establishment of United States of Europe. (PAP)
