NATO summit proved the alliance's unity

Andrzej Duda speaking to reporters after the summit ended in Brussels

President Andrzej Duda said on Thursday that the latest NATO summit proved the alliance's unity and had a focus on higher defence spending, for which Poland has already been praised by the US head of state, Donald Trump.

He added that speculation that NATO may break up has no basis, "on the contrary, countries of the alliance are beginning to spend more and more on defence objectives."

"The issue of burden sharing was the subject of a fervent discussion," Andrzej Duda pointed out. "President Donald Trump showed the disproportions in defence spending by the US in relation to European countries. The discussion was aimed at ensuring that European states implemented at least (...) a commitment (on the increase) of spending (to 2 pct of GDP)," the president said.

As Andrzej Duda noted, some states are doing it quicker, others slower, while "I can say with some satisfaction, that today's discussion concerned us - Poland - to a small extent."

This is because the US head of state Donald Trump mentioned Poland among the countries which are fulfilling their spending pledge - "1.99 percent (of GDP) according to his calculations," the president said.

As A ndrzejDuda explained, raising spending in NATO means greater security for the alliance's eastern flank, including Poland. "I am glad that this process in NATO, also increasing spending, is being implemented, because it means a safer eastern flank," the president said.

Referring to his conversation with the American leader, Andrzej Duda said that they raised the topic of his visit to the USA. "At the moment, final arrangements regarding my visit to the United States, to Washington, are being made," he stressed, announcing that it would most likely take place in September.

"We talked about military cooperation, about increasing the presence of US troops in Poland, further purchases of weapons from the United States, and therefore about the military security infrastructure," the Polish president added. (PAP/KG)
