"President cannot imagine disrespect for Jersey City Katyn memorial"

Poland's President Andrzej Duda holds disrespect for the Katyn Memorial in Jersey City for unimaginable, Andrzej Duda aide Krzysztof Szczerski told PAP on Friday commenting an ongoing conflict about the removal-designated monument.

On Monday, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop informed about plans to build a park on the grounds on which the memorial stands, and the monument's temporary move to the city's Department of Public Works. Plans to move the memorial, which commemorates 1940 mass executions of 22,000 Polish POWs by the Soviets in west Russia's Katyn Forest, evoked a hefty response from the local Polish community, which had not been consulted about the plans.

Protests against the memorial's removal have also been voiced by Poland.

Commenting on the matter, Krzysztof Szczerski said the Polish President held the memorial for "an important token of remembrance about the victims of genocide", and stressed that President Duda "could not imagine that (the memorial - PAP) could be disrespected in a country which so highly tributes heroes, especially those who laid down their lives for their country."

Krzysztof Szczerski voiced hope that talks around the issue between Jersey City authorities, the local Polish community and Polish diplomatic representatives will be an "open dialogue in the spirit of mutual respect." He also reminded about the Polish presidential couple's 2016 visit to the memorial. (PAP)
