K. Szczerski: President expects unity declaration at NATO summit

President Andrzej Duda expects a clear statement of NATO unity at the Alliance's forthcoming summit in London, the head of Duda's office Krzysztof Szczerski said on Sunday.

On Monday, Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda will depart for London, where Duda will attend a Tuesday-beginning summit marking NATO's 70th anniversary.

Krzysztof Szczerski said the summit will not be a formal meeting and will consist of a single three-hour working session of the NATO countries' state and government heads. He added that Duda will also take part in a meeting hosted by US President Donald Trump for leaders of countries with 2-percent of GDP defence budgets.

Krzysztof Szczerski said Poland expected the summit to issue a clear declaration of NATO unity, as well as decisions concerning the Alliance's future, especially regarding defence obligations towards its members and the member states' contributions to security.

Asked about French President Emmanuel Macron's recent claim that NATO was experiencing "brain death," and Turkey's refusal to back the Alliance's aid plan for Poland and the Baltic states if it refused to help Ankara it in its battle against Kurdish militia groups, Szczerski opined that such reports pending the London meeting were aimed to "discredit the Alliance and show its inner tensions."

He added that, today, NATO was "one of the world's mainstays of security."

On Tuesday, in London, Duda will also attend a Defence and Deterrance for a New Era meeting hosted by leading world think tanks. On the same day, the presidential couple will take part in a meeting organised by British Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace.

Also on Tuesday, Duda will attend a posthumous decoration ceremony for two Polish World War II pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain in 1940. (PAP)
