President to pay visit to Azerbaijan on Thursday
Polish President Andrzej Duda is going on an official visit to Azerbaijan on Thursday where he will meet with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, to discuss cooperation in transport, infrastructure, trade and energy.
President Duda's chief aide, Krzysztof Szczerski, said that in 2017, during President Aliyev's visit to Warsaw, a roadmap on strategic partnership and economic cooperation was signed between Poland and Azerbaijan.
Krzysztof Szczerski said that the main axes of bilateral cooperation included facilitation of the South-West transport corridor, which is part of the EU's broader interconnectivity context.
Officially referred to as the South-West Route, the project is a new transcontinental undertaking by the Ukrainian, Azerbaijani, Georgian, Iranian and Polish railways aimed at carrying rail freight from the EU through Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran to India. The corridor's total length is 7,654 km and the route is two to three times faster than by sea and 1,000 km shorter than an alternative land corridor running across Russian territory.
During the visit, the Polish and Azerbaijani presidents will open an economic forum designed for small and medium-sized companies during which contracts prepared by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) as well as Polish and Azerbaijani companies will be signed, Szczerski said. (PAP)
