President congratulates Ukraine's President-elect

Poland is ready to continue its comprehensive support for Ukraine in the area of security and reforming the state, President Andrzej Duda wrote in a congratulatory message to Ukrainian President-elect, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Volodymyr Zelensky, a TV entertainer with no political experience, won a resounding victory in Ukraine's presidential election on Sunday, taking 73.2 percent of the vote, according to exit polls. The incumbent President, Petro Poroshenko, has admitted defeat.

Commenting on Zelensky's overwhelming victory, President Duda said that the choice reflects "the Ukrainian nation's expectations for a significant acceleration of the government's efforts in reforming the political and economic areas of the country and ensuring security and stabilisation in Ukraine."

"I want to assure you that Poland is ready to continue its comprehensive support for Ukraine in the area of security and reforming the state. You can count on my personal involvement in this. Taking into account our mutual relations, our countries should be an example of partnership, strengthening friendly relations and shaping mutual agreement in the region," Andrzej Duda also wrote.

"Poles have always welcomed democratic and pro-European transformations in Ukraine. We continue to express our solidarity towards Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. We also continue our efforts to bring Ukraine closer to European and Euro-Atlantic structures," Andrzej Duda went on to say.

Apart from the official message, President Duda also held a telephone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday evening, Duda's chief aide Krzysztof Szczerski said.

Andrzej Duda invited the President-elect to pay a visit to Poland, Szczerski also said. (PAP)
