For nine years, April 10 has been a very difficult day, a day of pain, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw on Wednesday night.

President Duda was speaking on the ninth anniversary of the 2010 Polish presidential plane crash near Smolensk in western Russia that took the lives of the presidential couple and a range of Poland's top officials.

"It is such a day that we meet in the evening. When you look from the perspective of where I am standing at the moment and you close your eyes you will see, as then, on those April days starting from the 10th, and over the next weeks - a sea of vigil lights. And people, in pain, devastated," President Duda said.

"My beloved ones, I would like to sincerely thank you for these nine years of memory," the president told the crowd that gathered in front of the palace for the final event in Wednesday's all-day-long commemoration.

On April 10, 2010, President Lech Kaczyński, his wife, the last President of Poland in exile Ryszard Kaczorowski and dozens of senior government officials and military commanders were killed in the air disaster near Smolensk, western Russia. The delegation was on its way to nearby Katyn to attend events marking the 70th anniversary of the 1940 Katyn Massacre, during which around 22,000 Polish POWs were murdered at the hands of the Soviets.
