The President writes to Alexander Lukashenko

President Lech Kaczyński

In a letter sent today to the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, Lech Kaczyński expressed his distress at and firm protest against the increasing harassment concerning the Association of Poles in Belarus.

The Polish President insisted that human rights, the foundation stone of all modern European societies, must be observed. According to Lech Kaczyński, detainments, attempts at intimidation and the taking over of property from Poles undermine what Belarus has been asserting many times – that Polish-Belarusian relations are friendly and that Belarus would like to join the European Union. The Polish President also doubts that the political system of Belarus is really changing as it declared.

He referred to the international commitments of the Republic of Belarus and the treaty concluded by and between the Republic of Poland and the Republic of Belarus with regard to good neighbour relations and cooperation. The Polish President believes that the Belarusian President will confirm that the will to maintain good relations between Poland and Belarus is indeed genuine by becoming personally involved in the matter.
