President congratulates new EU representatives
On behalf of Poland, President Lech Kaczyński has congratulated Herman Van Rompuy on being selected the first permanent President of the European Council, and Catherine Ashton on being nominated for the position of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Council, the presidential minister, Mariusz Handzlik, announced.
The minister also emphasised that Poland’s currently most important objective in the EU will be to increase the possibility of participating in the EU’s decision-making process in a manner that reflects our nation’s potential and position in the European Union. It is also crucial for Poland that the new leadership of the European Union ensure effective implementation of the principle of solidarity and loyalty between EU countries, in both external relations and internal affairs.
The European Union should also continue, or even enhance, its involvement in the East as a part of its relations with candidate and aspiring countries by continuing the “open door” policy and implementing particular projects within the Eastern Partnership, the presidential minister stated.
