Lech Kaczyński at the ILO conference in Geneva


The official state visit began on Monday, 15th June, with the President visiting the Palace of Nations in Geneva to meet with Juan Somavia, the Director General of the International Labour Organisation. Afterwards, Lech Kaczyński delivered a speech opening the plenary session of the Global Summit with regard to the crisis on the labour market. The President was the first speaker after Juan Somavia delivered his introductory address.

At about 13:00, a ceremonial lunch was held by the Director General for the heads of states and governments participating in the Global Summit. Political figures such as the presidents of France, Paraguay and Finland were present during the meal.

In the afternoon, the President and the First Lady visited the complex of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). In the complex, the President met with the Director General of CERN and, during his visit, he talked with Polish scientists employed by the Organisation. After the official part was over and after the President and the First Lady entered their names into the visitors’ book, they and the persons accompanying them, had to put on blue safety helmets to be allowed to go one hundred metres underground to see the Large Hadron Collider – the world's largest highest-energy particle accelerator.

In the evening, the President and his wife participated in a party which was held in the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

The visit of Lech Kaczyński coincided with the 90th anniversary of the establishment of ILO. Poland currently presides over the ILO Administrative Council which is one of the two main administrative bodies of the ILO, the second one being the International Labour Conference.
