On 5 December 2008, the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr Lech Kaczyński set a message of condolence to the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church over the passing away of His Holiness Alexy II.

The message reads as follows:

“It was with sadness that I received news about the passing of His Holiness Alexy II, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia.

During his ministry in the Russia Orthodox Church and also as its Head over the last eighteen years, His Holiness was a witness of a difficult history of the Orthodox Church on the territory of Russian in the 20th century. Upon the fall of the Soviet Union, he was committed to the spiritual and intellectual development of the Russian society and was also a participant of the ecumenical dialogue.

Sharing the grief of the Russian Nation and of the Members of the Russian Orthodox Church I wish to extend on my own behalf and on behalf of the Polish Nation our sincere condolences on the passing of His Holiness Alexy II. ”
