On November 6th 2001 on the occasion of the Independence Day President of the United States of America George W. Bush sent congratulations to President of the Republic of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski. President Bush wrote: Congratulations to you and the people of Poland on the 83rd anniversary of the independence of the modern Polish state on November 11. Poland was the leader of change across Central and East Europe a decade ago, and today Poland is a leader in defending freedom against terrorism, closing ranks with the other members of the NATO Alliance following the tragedy of September 11. America deeply appreciates Poland`s support in the war against terrorism, and I am confident that our shared values of freedom and democracy will prevail. Since independence, the Polish people have continually preserved their commitment to freedom. Often facing overwhelming challenges. I will fondly remember my trip to Poland earlier this year, during my first trip to Europe as President of the United States. In the coming year, I am certain that cooperation and friendship between the United States and Poland will continue to grow stronger.
