Poland will use its position as host of the 2016 NATO summit in Warsaw to press for raised NATO presence on the Alliance's eastern flank, President Bronislaw Komorowski said Wednesday after a National Security Council (RBN) sitting.

The sitting was mainly devoted to preparations for next year's NATO summit in Warsaw.

Komorowski said Poland's aim was to reinforce the rotating presence of NATO forces in eastern Europe with more standing presence. He explained that this mainly meant weaponry depots, whose close location would reduce the time needed to prepare defensive operations.

Komorowski said that the Warsaw summit will also assess progress in implementing decisions made at the previous summit in Newport, Wales.

"This will be a very important summit for Poland's security, the entire eastern NATO flank and the directions the Alliance chooses for its strategic development", the president said. In this context he reminded that in Newport Poland managed to convince the leading NATO members to declare raised defence spending. He added that Poland's recent defence budget hike to 2 percent GDP was now being followed by the leading NATO countries. (PAP)
