Polish and Lithuanian presidents, Lech Kaczyński and Dalia Grybauskaitė, met in the Presidential Palace on Friday after 4:00 p.m. This was the first visit in Poland of the new Lithuanian president after she took office in July this year.

“The talks focused on maintaining our strategic relations,” said Lech Kaczyński during a press conference.
The president referred to intense collaboration between the two countries during the term of Valdas Adamkus and hoped that it would be continued in such areas where cooperation is vital for Poland and Lithuania.

“I hope that all positive efforts undertaken over the past 3 and a half years and our common accomplishments will continue in the future.”

The talks involved issues relating to the countries’ bilateral relations as well as their collaboration in the EU and NATO. Lech Kaczyński also talked to Grybauskaitė about the Polish minority in Lithuania and the spelling of Polish surnames.

Lech Kaczyński said the resolution on the issue of spelling of Polish names is “on the right path.” Grybauskaitė declared Lithuania’s readiness to settle “all problematic issues” between Poland and Lithuania, including issues linked to the Polish minority in Lithuania.

“I only have the best intentions when it comes to relations with Lithuania. This stems both from our history and from our present day dealings,” said the Polish President.
