President Bronislaw Komorowski, his wife Anna, artists and journalists saw in Warsaw on Tuesday Agnieszka Holland's "In Darkness" based on the true story of a Polish petty thief who helped a handful of Jews escape the Nazis by hiding in sewers.

"In Darkness", a Polish-German-Canadian production, written by David F. Shamoon, based on the book "In the Sewers of Lvov" by Robert Marshall, has been inspired by the real exploits of a Polish sewer worker and sometime burglar named Leopold Socha, who helped Jews during the Nazi occupation of Lvov (now in Ukraine).

"In Darkness" is a Polish Oscar candidate in the Best Foreign Language Film category. (PAP)
