First official state visit to Germany
On Friday morning, President Bronisław Komorowski made his first official state visit to Germany. He met with Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, and then with Norbert Lammert, the President of the Bundestag. During Friday talks, Komorowski and Merkel agreed that cooperation between their countries should be developed. Steffen Seibert, the German government spokesperson, was quoted as saying by DPA, that President Komorowski and the German Chancellor agreed that “there is a good opportunity for further developing relations which are already good.”
Merkel was pleased to hear Komorowski's proposal to intensify the activity of the Weimar Triangle in order to develop cooperation between Germany, France and Poland.
Later on, the president awarded German citizens Medals of Gratitude, founded by the European Solidarity Centre on the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Solidarity movement. Bronisław Komorowski also laid flowers at a monument – a fragment of the wall of the Gdańsk Shipyard. In the afternoon, the Polish president was at Bellevue Palace to meet with Christian Wulff, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The two presidents announced their wish to continue activity aimed at reconciling their nations and making relations closer. There is a possibility of doing so in the following year, as there will be numerous anniversaries to celebrate together.
”Poland strives to play an important role in the EU and relations with Germany are of immense importance here,” Bronisław Komorowski said at a press conference following his meeting with the President of Germany. “We wish to plan activity facilitating good relations between Germany and Poland,” he added.
After the conference, Komorowski and Wulff went to the Sachdenhausen Museum where they laid flowers in the cell of General Stefan Grot-Rowecki and at the Memorial.
In the evening, Bronisław Komorowski attended a dinner hosted by Christian Wulff.
