President Andrzej Duda and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres are attending Monday's official opening of the COP24 climate summit, which has started in Katowice, south Poland.

 

The opening was accompanied by a so-called High Level Panel, whose speakers included Andrzej Duda, Antonio Guterres, COP23 President and Fijian state head Frank Bainimarama, UN General Assembly head Maria Fernanda Espinosa, COP24 President Michał Kurtyka, Polish Environment Minister Henryk Kowalczyk and Katowice Mayor Marcin Krupa.

 

Poland is ready today to take its share of responsibility for international security, including in the sphere of climate policy, President Andrzej Duda said at the official opening.


Andrzej Duda pointed out that COP24 is taking place in the year when Poland celebrates the centenary of regaining its independence.


"The organisation of the climate summit proves that, just like the Poland reborn 100 years ago, our country is today actively working for peaceful cooperation between states, based on the principles of: observance of international law, equality, solidarity and mutual respect," the President stressed.


The Polish President also said that Poland is ready to support the negotiations "of key importance for the future of our and future generations" to be conducted during the summit.

 

 

On Monday, heads of state will be asked to adopt the Declaration on Just Transition, drafted by the Polish government, dedicated to ensuring a fair and solidarity-based transformation that will help to protect the climate while maintaining economic development and jobs.

 

Also on Monday in Katowice,  Andrzej Duda will also meet Slovenian President Borut Pahor, Vatican State Secretary Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Swiss President Alain Berset, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic, Fijian President Josaia Voreque Bainimarama (Frank Bainimarama), and Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov.

 

The COP24 summit will continue until December 14, its main objective is the passage of legislation implementing the Paris Agreement. (PAP/MK)
