Polish President Andrzej Duda and first lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda attended the opening on Monday of the annual Marcin Gortat Camp (MGC) a series of basketball sessions for kids organised by Poland's only player in the American league, the NBA.

The event, held for the 11th time, began in Gortat's home city of Łódź (central Poland), in the Atlas Arena. The opening session featured a record number of 150 pupils from all over the country.

As he welcomed the camp participants, President  Andrzej Duda said he and his wife were pleased to meet them and Gortat himself. The head of state also praised the kids for their fitness and their delight in practising basketball.

- We thank Marcin Gortat for being willing to share the fruits of his great sporting success - Andrzej Duda said, "and for also looking at the affairs of our country, our children and youth. It is a wonderful contribution."

Noting the MGC's objective, the president also thanked Poland's only NBA player for "looking after the physical culture and development of Polish youth, and for searching for new talent for Polish basketball."

For her part, the first lady said she was pleased so many young people were spending their holidays actively.

To further mark the occasion, the president wore a sporting outfit and took part in a free throw contest, followed by a one-on-one game against one of the participants of the Marcin Gortat Camp 2018.

After the sessions in Łódź, the MCG will move to Włocławek (central Poland), Rumia (northern Poland), Warsaw and Lubin (southwestern Poland), before returning to Gortat's home city for the final event - a charity match between the NBA star's own team and a Polish Army side - on July 21.(PAP)
