Poland needs a constitution that would be suitable for 21st century realities, President Andrzej Duda said on Thursday in an inaugural speech at a Warsaw congress that sums up the regional constitutional debates held so far under the President's auspices.

On the centenary of Poland regaining its independence, Poles should have the sense that they can truly shape their future, the president added.

During the congress, President Duda announced the conclusion of the first stage of the pre-referendum debates.

"I'd like to thank all those who for nearly a year have been engaged in the dialogue - thousands of my compatriots, Polish men and women, participants in our meetings, as well as those who have sent their comments to the President's Office," Andrzej Duda stressed.

In this context, Andrzej Duda recalled Poland's first constitution, passed in the late 18th century, which envisaged a revision every quarter of a century. "Today we also face a similar challenge. Poland needs a constitution that would fit the realities of the 21st century," the President stressed.

Last year, President Duda suggested Poland's constitution should be amended to take into account the changed domestic and international environment, two decades after the country's basic law was passed. To this end, he would like to ask citizens whether to alter the constitution and if so, in what respect. His preferred date is somewhere around November 11, 2018, the centenary of Poland regaining its independence.
