Poland and Hungary are in the EU, NATO and the Visegrad Group and share common views on many issues. Polish-Hungarian co-operation brings visible effects, President Andrzej Duda said on Friday in Budapest after talks with Hungarian state head Janos Ader.

President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda are on a two-day visit to Hungary in connection with Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day

"We share absolutely identical views on many issues, some others are still under debate. But most importantly, we participate in several dynamically growing formats, and the effects of this co-operation are visible," President Duda told a press conference attended with Ader.

Andrzej Duda pointed out that both countries belonged to the EU, NATO and the Visegrad Group, and observed that most of their joint undertakings on these platforms proved successful.

President Duda observed that a North-South gas corridor would be a valuable effect of co-operation under the Polish-Croatian Three Seas infrastructure development project embracing the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. He added that he and Ader had also discussed road connections on the North-South axis, including the construction of the Via Carpathia route, and plans for a fast rail connection between Poland and Hungary.

He also announced the signing of a founding act for a Polish-Hungarian Co-operation Institute in Poland and Hungary, and voiced hope that the new institution would help deepen Polish-Hungarian ties in science and culture.

President Ader stressed the importance of enabling diversified oil and gas supplies, and in this context emphasised the need for inter-connectors. He also praised Poland for building an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) terminal in its northwestern port city Swinoujscie, observing that this signified "an enormous step forward" in diversifying gas supplies.

In the evening, both Presidents participated in a ceremonial gala, during which the Polish-Hungarian Friendship-Day Flag was passed to the mayor of Kielce, south central Poland, where next year's celebrations will take place.

During the ceremony, Andrzej Duda reminded his audience that, two years ago, Poland marked the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. "We celebrated this event with pride, speaking about the values that, thanks to Christianity, embedded themselves into the Polish soul - and today the Polish nation is a nation shaped on the basis of Christian culture and values," the President noted.

He pointed out that "in this respect we are also brothers with Hungary." "You are a nation that cultivates Christian traditions, for which they are important. Today, we, together, carry them to Europe, which in many cases has forgotten about them," said Andrzej Duda.

The Polish President also pointed out that Polish-Hungarian friendship was one thousand years old. "Today we live in independent homelands, in free states, we can travel all over Europe. Today, we do not need a passport to cross the border within the Schengen zone, today we live in different conditions," he continued.

As he added, "both of our countries and nations are striving for one thing: that the Europe in which we are, be safe, prosperous, and above all honest and just - creating good conditions for the development of our societies."

The Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day has been celebrated since 2007, interchangeably in Poland and Hungary. This year, events will be held on Friday March 23 in the city of Veszprem, some 100 kilometres southwest of Budapest. (PAP)
