Poland and the US should cooperate in solving the situation in Ukraine for the good of peace in our region, said the head of the Polish President's Office, Krzysztof Szczerski, on Wednesday, after meeting with US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker.

The hour-long meeting concerned, among other things, regional security, including the conflict in eastern Ukraine. "It was a long and very interesting talk. The American side wanted to hear Poland’s opinion, assessment of the situation in Ukraine and of the conflict," Minister Szczerski said.

He added that Polish-US dialogue and an exchange of opinions on Ukraine are necessary in the search for solutions for the Ukrainian situation.

"Poland and the US should co-operate on this issue, exchange information on their plans, assessments and steps for the good of peace in the region. This is very important, especially that Poland and the US are sitting on the UN Security Council," said the presidential minister.

Minister Szczerski said that the two exchanged their assessments on the situation in Ukraine. "We have confirmed that Poland as well as the US are involved in finding a peaceful and long-term solution for Ukraine. Poland supports Volker's activities in contacts with both sides of the conflicts - Russia and Ukraine.

Minister Krzysztof Szczerski said that sides also referred to Security Council debate on possible deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, but added the issue is still far from finalisation as its requires, among other things, the consent of all countries sitting on the Security Council, including Russia.

On Thursday, Minister Szczerski is due to meet in Washington with representatives of the US Department of State and with security advisors to the US president. (PAP)
