I want to congratulate the prime minister upon his entry into office, President Andrzej Duda said Monday at the official designation of Mateusz Morawiecki as the new Polish head of government.

Andrzej Duda praised Morawiecki's decision to leave the present government line-up unchanged, calling this "a good, amicable decision." He also stressed his belief in further positive cooperation with the government, and assured that he planned to strive towards this end.

"I want to congratulate the prime minister upon his full entry into office. Someone might say that that there are no changes. But there is a change - we have a new prime minister, who has decided to work with the to-date cabinet before he decides about any changes in it. (...) This is a good, amicable decision," Andrzej Duda said.

Commenting on his to-date dealings with the government, President Duda said they had been for the most part good, but mentioned "certain hindrances" which he hoped would disappear under the new prime minister. He also praised the government's to-date achievements, noting that the Beata Szydlo cabinet "showed that many things believed to be impossible were possible after all."

President Duda reminded the gathered officials that both he and the government were obliged to work for Poland and its people, and not themselves.

"We aren't working for ourselves, we're working for the Republic, for our countrymen," the president stressed, observing that this was "an immensely important task for us all."

Mateusz Morawiecki replaces Beata Szydlo, who resigned her post last week. Szydlo has been appointed deputy PM.

PM-designate Mateusz Morawiecki, speaking after a swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Monday, announced that his government would follow up on its predecessors' work and focus on family, labour and housing.

Mateusz Morawiecki will deliver a policy speech before the Sejm (lower house) on Tuesday afternoon. The lower chamber of the Polish parliament will hold a vote of confidence in the new government on Wednesday morning. (PAP)
