President Andrzej Duda on Friday accepted the resignation of to-date Prime Minister Beata Szydlo and designated deputy PM, Finance and Development Minister Mateusz Morawiecki as the new prime minister.

President Duda thanked Beata Szydlo for her work as government head and expressed hope that his cooperation with the new prime minister would be "at least as good" as in her case.

The president also underlined that Beata Szydlo's function cost her much effort and personal strain, as she had to make "difficult and responsible" decisions.

Thanking the outgoing PM, the head of state praised her contribution in words full of gratitude: "Most of all, I wish to thank you for your great effort on behalf of the Republic. Only someone who was close to your work and your service to Poland can know how difficult it was, how much mental and physical effort it required, what immense pressure you had to endure when making difficult decisions, and how very responsible these decisions were", President Andrzej Duda said.

In his address, Mateusz Morawiecki underlined he felt "much honoured" to be the new Polish PM and to have been a minister in the Szydlo government, and assured that he planned to continue its political programme.

The incoming head of government stated his main concerns were national security, economic growth and strengthening Poland's international standing, and promised to work "in service to Polish society and Polish families". (PAP)
