Lutherans are an inherent part of Polish history, the common history of all Polish people, President Andrzej Duda said Friday at celebrations of the 500th Reformation anniversary in Warsaw's Royal Castle.

In his address, President Duda pointed out that the Reformation anniversary preceded Poland's independence centennial falling next year, observing that this was a good occasion to mark the contributions Lutherans made to the rebirth of Polish statehood.

"Polish citizens of the Lutheran faith defended the country in 1920 and 1939, Polish Lutherans perished in Katyn, (...), fought in the Warsaw Uprising. During the German occupation, many Protestants paid the highest price for their patriotism, for their loyalty to Poland and Polish traditions", Andrzej Duda said.

Listing prominent Protestants in Polish history, President Duda named, among others, the lexicographer Samuel Bogumil Linde, the painter Wojciech Gerson as well as Polish national bards Jan Kochanowski and Mikolaj Rej, considered the fathers of the modern Polish language.

Also today, the president concluded that Poland's Protestant community plays a meaningful role in the country's life. (PAP)
