President to attend Arraiolos Group meeting in Malta

President Andrzej Duda will go to Malta to attend a meeting of 12 leaders of European states cooperating within the Arraiolos Group. President Duda will also hold a face-to-face meeting with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The meeting in Valletta on Sept. 14 and 15 will be attended by the presidents of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy and Malta.

"A debate on the future of a united Europe is the main goal of meetings held by the Arraiolos Group. The current threats and most important challenges facing the Old Continent are also in the focus of such gatherings", President's top aide Krzysztof Szczerski said.

According to the official, Europe's socio-economic development will be another topic in Valletta. "The presidents will discuss what should be done to animate the economic growth and make EU economies more competitive. The social dimension of the European project will be debated during the Malta meeting", Minister Szczerski said, adding that the daily agenda would also focus on the struggle against poverty and unemployment, especially among young people.

Security policy in the Mediterranean Sea region in the face of the migration crisis will be another key subject of the two-day talks.

While in Malta, President Andrzej Duda will hold a bilateral meeting with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The two officials will discuss, among other topics, the issue of potential German war reparations for Poland, according to Krzysztof Szczerski.

The Polish head of state will also meet with President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and PM Joseph Muscat. "The talks will focus on bilateral issues, with special emphasis on economic relations, security and cooperation on the international arena", Minister Szczerski said.

Leaders of the Arraiolos Group met for the first time in Arraiolos, Portugal, in 2003. In 2013, the meeting was held in Krakow, southern Poland. The Arraiolos Group comprises presidents from EU countries who do not directly perform the executive function. (PAP)
