Britain's Prince and Princess of Cambridge William and Kate Monday in Warsaw visited the Warsaw Rising Museum dedicated to the city's 1944 revolt against its German occupants.

The royal pair, accompanied by Poland's President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda, toured the museum's main display tracing the history of the Warsaw Uprising, in which units of Poland's Home Army fought against overwhelming German forces through August and September 1944.

The Prince and Princess were also informed about the circumstances which led to the insurgency, through which Poland's then exiled government hoped to seize Warsaw from the Germans and install Polish rule in the city before it fell to the westwards-advancing Red Army.

After touring the museum Prince William and Princess Kate spoke with World War II veterans, including Warsaw Rising participants.

Later Prince William and President Duda lit memorial lights at a memorial to fallen Warsaw Rising fighters. They also commemorated around 40 British Royal Air Force pilots shot down over Poland while dropping aid to the Warsaw insurgents.

"To visit the Warsaw Rising Museum is a deeply and thought-provoking experience", the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote in the Museum's commemorative book on Monday.

"This place epitomises the spirit and courage of the Polish people. Our abiding memory will be the invincible spirit of those heroes who fought for freedom and paid the ultimate sacrifice", the British royal couple wrote.

"We will remember, William and Catherine", the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote after they visited the museum. (PAP)
