"Europe needs good cooperation today; we must act in solidarity, the road is not to build divisions but to remove them", Polish President Andrzej Duda said after a meeting with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Warsaw.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Buedenbender were welcomed by Polish presidential couple, Andrzej Duda and Agata Kornhauser-Duda, in front of Warsaw's Presidential Palace on Friday.

The presidents held a face-to-face conversation, followed by plenary talks of Polish and German delegations. The heads of state met the media in the afternoon.

Steinmeier's visit is his first to Poland as German president.

President Andrzej Duda expressed hope that French President Emmanuel Macron would issue an invitation to Paris for a trilateral meeting within the Weimar Triangle format.

The Weimar Triangle is a platform of cooperation between France, Germany and Poland.

President Duda said that he had briefed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on his recent telephone conversation with the French president.

"I talked about it in the context of (...) trilateral cooperation within the Weimar Triangle. I told him that President Macron had declared that he was interested in cooperation", Duda said.

"I hope President Macron will issue an invitation to Paris to meet in the Weimar Triangle format", the Polish president added.

"Europe today needs solidarity and good cooperation to overcome the ongoing crisis", Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The Polish President stressed that he agreed with his German counterpart they had to work together in solidarity.

"The way is not to build divisions but to remove them" President Duda said, stressing that the presidents had a great role to play here.

"We joked with the (German) president that we should tone down even the strongest emotions and discussions and never allow them to cross acceptable boundaries", President Duda added.

The topics discussed by the two presidents included European affairs, Brexit, the conflict in Ukraine and the forthcoming centenary of Poland's independence as well as Polish-German cooperation.

"We will certainly come up with some formula of joint commemorations of this anniversary", Andrzej Duda said, adding that they would also propose another field of cooperation, for example for historians. (PAP, own information)
