You have devoted your entire life to the Homeland, to a free Homeland which should be promoted", President Andrzej Duda said on Wednesday, May 3 Constitution Day, having presented the Order of the White Eagle to five persons at a ceremony at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

"These are your merits for a free and proud Republic of Poland", the president went on. See also: President: Citizens should be proud of free Poland

"The Order is for me a symbol of Polish freedom since it was awarded when Poland was a truly free country", President Duda went on, stressing that foreign authorities did not grant this distinction when Poland was not an independent country.

"They did not desecrate this distinction and that is why it is pure today and can be granted to most outstanding persons", the president stressed.

Poland's highest distinction was awarded to Adam Bujak, Professor Mieczyslaw Chorazy, Jan Krzysztof Kelus, Zofia Wladyslawa Teliga-Mertens and Professor Mieczyslaw Aleksander Tomaszewski.

The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's highest distinction, established in 1705, and given for outstanding civilian and military merits for the country. It has been bestowed on the most outstanding Polish people and foreigners. (PAP)
