Climate policy in the context of the December summit in Paris and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline were the focus of the first day of President Andrzej Duda's two-day visit to Hungary, where he is attending a meeting of the presidents of the Visegrad Group (V4).

During talks on climate policy and the Paris summit, requested by Hungarian President Janos Ader, the V4 heads of state agreed that any climate agreement reached in Paris had to encompass all greenhouse gas emitting countries in the world, Polish presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski said at a press briefing on Thursday.

"It will only make sense when it is not based only on European reductions but worldwide ones as well. This is also Poland's position", minister Szczerski explained.

"It is also necessary to discuss the consequences of poor water management and soil management", Szczerski said with reference to the V4 presidents' shared view that all of the environment, and not just air, had to be considered.

The heads of state agreed that every country had to find "its own individual path to fulfilling the climate targets", Polish President Andrzej Duda's aide also told reporters. He added that the V4 countries had different energy traditions: some focused on nuclear or renewable energy, others - as President Duda recently said - wanted to use advanced coal-burning technologies.

The discussion on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline focused on whether this was an economic and not a political project, and what the consequences for Central Europe would be, according to Szczerski. He added that the Polish president believed that the problem should be raised at the European level.

"There are signs that the European Commission wants to take a good look at the Nord Stream 2 project from the point of view of European law. I hope that the EC will take decisive and consistent action on the matter", Szczerski said.

Minister Szczerski added that the V4 heads of state would discuss a migration strategy on Friday.

Besides the presidents of the V4 countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia), some of the meetings are being attended by Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. (PAP)
