The situation in Ukraine was the subject of Monday's brief couloir talks between US and Polish Presidents Barack Obama and Andrzej Duda during the 70th UN General Assembly session in New York.

After the meeting with Obama Duda said the conversation also concerned Poland's efforts towards a non-standing membership on the UN Security Council in 2018-2019.

Andrzej Duda, whose US visit is among others aimed at canvassing support for the membership, also mentioned the matter during his earlier address to the General Assembly, where he took the floor immediately after the US president.

Duda said that according to Obama the Ukraine issue was "an extremely important matter".

Commenting his address at the session, Andrzej Duda said its focal point was observance of international law and disagreement to aggression as guarantees of international peace.

Asked about the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, president Duda said Poland could not agree to refugee relocation by fixed quotas. Andrzej Duda also stressed the need for measures to still refugee-breeding conflicts. (PAP)
