Polish President Andrzej Duda in New York met with European Council President Donald Tusk and Ukrainian Head of State Petro Poroshenko, Presidential Minister Krzysztof Szczerski said.

President Duda met with his Ukrainian counterpart for the first time. Earlier the two politicians only held phone conversations, Szczerski said, adding that the meeting held on the side-lines of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly focused on the role played by Poland and the Visegrad Group in restoring long-lasting peace in Ukraine.

The two presidents condemned plans announced by pro-Russian separatists to organise local government elections in the Donbas region and declared that EU sanctions should be intensified if these elections took place, the Ukrainian president's administration reported.

According to a communique issued by the Ukrainian side, President Duda declared that Poland would continue as Ukraine's reliable partner regarding its independence and territorial integrity as well as the implementation of reforms. The Ukrainian president's administration announced that the Polish head of state would pay a visit to Ukraine still this year.

The Ukrainian president praised Poland's efforts to restore peace and settle the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region, the communique added.

Speaking about President Duda's meeting with Donald Tusk, Szczerski described it as friendly.

The Polish president also met with the king of Jordan. "This was a long and very important meeting focusing on security in the Middle East and the struggle against the Islamic State," he added.

The Polish president also met with Presidents of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman and Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Szczerski also said that President Duda shook hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "This was a man's handshake," he added. (PAP)
