Andrzej Zybertowicz - Advisor to the President
Born on 30 September 1954 in Bydgoszcz. In 1973-77, he studied history at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Torun, specialising in archive studies. He also studied at the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan. From the very beginning of his scholarly career, he was closely related with the NCU. From 1977 on, he was working in the Philosophy Unit of the Institute of Social Science, NCU, and subsequently, in 1989-1995 in the Chair of Sociology of the NCU, and from 1995 on in the NCU Institute of Sociology.
From July to September 1982, he was arrested and detained on a charge of underground publishing activities. In 1985, he obtained a doctoral title at the Faculty of History of the Adam Mickiewicz University. His postdoctoral (habilitation) thesis in the area of sociology, he presented in 1997 at the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Warsaw. The presentation of the thesis was preceded by fellowships at the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Sydney and Ann Arbour.
He was a visiting professor and attended seminars in Australia, Montenegro, Spain, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Canada, Lithuania, Germany, Norway, Russia, Romania, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA, Hungary and the United Kingdom.
As of mid-1990’s, he has been commenting social and political developments for the media. In 1998-2006, he was Director of the NCU Institute of Sociology. In 2003-2006, he was a member of Polish Academy of Sciences Committee for the Studies of Science. As of 2003, he has been an expert in the Foundation for Development of Polish Science. Starting from 2004, he has been chairing the Unit for Group Interests in the NCU Institute of Sociology.
In 2005, he chaired the local Organising Committee for the 7th Congress of the European Sociological Association which was held in Torun. In 2006, he started a post-graduate Unit of the Sociology of Internal Security at the NCU, the unit that he was chairing until September 2007. Starting from 2006, he has served as an expert to the Committee for Verification of Military Intelligence Services.
In 2006-2007, he chaired the Curricular Board of the Central Training Unit of the Internal Security Agency. From July to November 2007, he was chief security advisor to Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński.
