A Hanukkah at the Presidential Palace

On 18 December 2006, the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, received representatives of the European Jewish Congress at the Presidential Palace. The delegation, headed by EJC President Pierre Besnainou, and the Polish President discussed the current international situation, and in particular concerns over the growing role of Iran in the Middle East. Commenting on the situation in the region, President Kaczyński said that Poland was interested in seeing peace in the Middle East. The delegation members expressed their appreciation for the President’s policy to help achieve this objective, and emphasized the positive role played by Poland in Europe-wide discourse on Israel and on relations with the Jewish people.

During the second part of the meeting, for the first time in the history of Polish Jews a ceremony of the lighting of Hanukkah candles was held in the presence of the President of the Republic of Poland at the Presidential Palace. Also present at the meeting were Undersecretary of State at the Presidential Chancellery Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka; Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Chief Rabbi of Poland; Rabbi Shalom DovBer Stambler, Head, Chabad Lubavitch of Poland; Piotr Kadlčik, President, Union of Jewish Religious Communities of Poland (ZGWZ); Israeli Ambassador David Peleg; Monika Krajewska, an artist; Marek Jeżowski, Head, Jewish Cultural Society Beit’; Artur Hofman, President, Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland (TSKZ); as well as the delegation of the European Jewish Congress.

Addressing the guests, the President expressed a hope that the fact that the occasion had brought together several Jewish organisations attested to the richness of the life of Poland’s Jewish community. Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Chief Rabbi of Poland, presented the President with a prayer written by an outstanding pre-war intellectual, Rabbi Professor Moses Schorr, a Polish patriot, who said prayers for the welfare of the Polish President and Poland in the Great Synagogue of Warsaw before the war:

‘Oh Lord of the Universe, Thou who lend might and power to Nations, Bless the Most Illustrious Republic of Poland, Deliver Her from all misery, Make Her great and powerful, and give wonderful prosperity to Her and to all Her citizens. Oh, Lord, send Thy Blessing upon the President of the Republic, upon the legislative bodies and upon all the helmsmen of the State, Amen.’

Then the President participated in the ceremony of the lighting of Hanukkah candles, following which the Jewish guests sang a blessing.
