Telegram of congratulations to the President-elect of Ukraine

On the occasion of Viktor Yushchenko’s victory in the election for the office of the President of Ukraine, President of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, sent a telegram of congratulations to the President-elect.

Below are excerpts from the telegram:

On the occasion of your victory in the election for the office of the President of Ukraine, I wish to convey, also on behalf of the Polish people, sincere congratulations and best wishes for continued success.

We acknowledge with regard and satisfaction the verdict obtained in democratic elections, one that expresses the will of the people of Ukraine. Deserving special recognition is the fact, that the Ukrainian political crisis was resolved with due adherence to the law, without recourse to the use of force. It bespeaks of the sense of responsibility and commitment of the Ukrainian political class to the cause of building a civic society. A reason for personal satisfaction is my involvement in the international mediatory mission that effectively helped advance the process of working out a political compromise.

Ukraine enters the year 2005 with great hopes and expectations attaching to the changes in the country’s political mold and fabric. As the President you face the great challenge of fulfilling all these expectations and of providing further momentum to the process of Ukraine’s modernization and overall development. I want to assure you Mr. President that Poland shall continue to support closer alignment of Ukraine with European and Euro-Atlantic structures.

I would like to use this opportunity to ask you to convey to the people of Ukraine our best wishes for future success and prosperity. And I want to assure you Mr. President that you command in Poland feelings of great respect and affection and that we shall support every endeavor serving to secure prosperous future for Ukraine.
