Irena Zofia Romaszewska

Irena Zofia Romaszewska, born on 17 August 1940 in Warsaw, a graduate of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw.

 

In 1967, together with other colleagues, she was the driving force in the campaign of collecting signatures among fellow academics in defense of Adam Michnik who had been suspended in student’s rights at the University of Warsaw. In the years 1969-1971, Ms Romaszewska conducted in her apartment a clandestine political self-education workshop. From September 1976 on, she was organizing a fundraising action to support the oppressed workers in Radom and Ursus factories, and since 1977, along with her husband Zbigniew Romaszewski, she ran  the Intervention Bureau of Workers’ Defense Committee KOR, then transformed into the Committee for Social Self-Defense within KOR, documenting cases of human rights violations.  She was editor of the section "Rule of Law" in "Information Bulletin" of the Workers’ Defense Committee.
